The Islamic Institute for Spiritual Formation (IISF)
for the promotion of holistic religious education,
creational stewardship, and spiritually-infused living
In his wonderful little book, Love is Letting Go of Fear, Gerald Jampolsky writes that “we teach what we want to learn.” As I have pondered the truth of this statement in the light of my own calling to teach, I have come to the realization that what I most want to learn is how to walk with God, how to bring my will into an ever-increasing harmony with God’s will and so become a living conduit through which God’s healing and mercy and grace and forgiveness and love and other beautiful qualities can be made manifest in the world. In the English spiritual lexicon, the phrase “spiritual formation” represents the psycho-spiritual transformative process by which this search for God takes the form of a cultivated practice, with God’s grace and with the help of our religious practices, study, self-inspection and interrogation, guides, friends, and other intermediaries and techniques. So I have come to the conclusion that this is what I must teach: purely and simply because this is what I most want to learn.
The Islamic Institute for Spiritual Formation is thus a “place” — sumultaneously physical and virtual — where this teaching and learning and spiritual companionship can be rooted and so become a more regular part of our lives. Because the physical locations of our Toronto-based programming are varied, we are blessed with the creative opportunity to bring our courses and programs to the community.
