Our programming includes:

Quarterly Institute Lectures

Our IISF quarterly lectures are open to the public, free, and focused on topics relevant to our study of Islam and the spiritual life.  These evenings provide an opportunity for the wider community to get a sense of who we are and what we do as well as an opportunity to take in a brief lecture that combines spiritual insight with academic integrity.  Our winter 2013 (inaugural) lecture was, “Toward an Islamic Theology of Inter-religious Friendship,” offered by Dr. Timothy J. Gianotti.  Future lecture dates have not been announced.

“Light Upon Light” evenings of spiritual discussion and fellowship

Our signature “Light Upon Light” spirituality discussion series features a variety of spiritually nourishing subjects in an inclusive space where participants of all faiths actively contribute in a manner that is respectful to all.  In these gatherings, we interweave textual study and facilitated discussion in an effort to promote a sense of spiritual fellowship across denominational and religious boundaries.  We are actively holding Light Upon Light sessions through  to the end of the year, 2016.  See our events page for details.

Holistic Courses in Islamic Studies & Islamic Spirituality

Our first Islamic studies offering, delivered in 2013, was an eight-session Introduction to Islam (Jan – Feb 2013).  This was followed in the spring by two, concurrent courses: READ! An Introduction to Reading and Interpreting the Qur’an and SHINE! The Divine Attributes: a practitioner’s introduction to the Qur’anic way of transformation. Future course dates have not been announced.

The Healing Circle

These bi-monthly gatherings seek religious and spiritual resources for healing and transformation.  In the spring of 2013, we spent an evening exploring depression, and we devoted a second gathering to the spiritual management of chronic afflictions. Please stay tuned for new topics, dates, and locations.

Comparative Spirituality Seminar

This seminar, devoted to reading and discussing spiritual classics from many faith traditions will be launched in the coming months, in sha’ allah. Please stay tuned for new topics, dates, and locations.

“RUH” Deepening Seminar

Devoted to the study of classical Muslim works of spiritual formation and practice, the RUH seminar is conceived to be an ongoing, bi-weekly, Sunday night seminar that includes academic, contemplative, and practice-oriented dimensions.  God willing, the RUH seminar will commence in the coming months.

The Contemplative Qur’an

Sometimes offered in one of our public gathering spaces and sometimes within the intimacy of community members’ homes, these evenings of contemplative recitation and deep, meditative listening, are followed by mindful fellowship, spiritual discussion, and prayer.  Please contact us if you would like to have Dr. Timothy facilitate one of these evenings in your area or home.

Yearly Retreat

Each year, we plan to offer a one or two-day, weekend retreat on a particular theme, our upcoming theme is GROWING IN PRAYER.  Stay tuned for details.
